The circular movements incorporated in Ba Gua Zhang help to form an excellent self-defence system, which can have enormously beneficial health benefits to those practising it.
As these circles of energy connect but not in a linear fashion, they are aided considerably by a rather more Western goal-orientated understanding which aims to develop a more connected and circular awareness. Applied to everyday life, this quality can help to better condition certain qualities, which can lead to a greater flexibility in all areas of life.
Ba Gua is practised more quickly and dynamically than Tai Chi, so as such can be both invigorating and relieving. Both styles are, however, related to one another. The energy of nature, the sky and earth and the 8 direction emerge noticeably to the practiser through a step-by-step, uninterrupted sequence of circular movement. Connecting oneself to this continuous movement and insodoing pay attention to the ‘unfamiliar’ can greatly expand our individual awareness.
In my experience, Ba Gua Zhang is a valuable gift to those wishing to experience real pleasure in movement.
