My conflict with martial arts began at the early age of 8 years old.
At that time I was learning Judo, and later Shotokan Karate. Following successful completion of a masters karate exam a short while later I removed my black belt- the outer sign this graduation. The reason for it was that I felt like I was still missing something; positive relations with my inner self (in terms of thoughts and feelings). My search led me to Buddhism, Tai Chi Chuan, Chi Kung and Kung Fu- Praying Mantis.
At this time of my youth I trained a lot in the outdoors; with nature and in the woods at night. In doing so, I felt supported by the natural movements of wind, animals and trees amongst others, so that my creativity could flourish. At such moments, impulsive movements and forms to suit my own individual body began to develop.
I therefore try to convey to people a somewhat more useful, valuable form of martial arts; to give the impulse needed to motivate them to start setting themselves free. They can then begin to feel a more sensitive and well-balanced, whilst challenging experience.
Kung Fu directs energy outside the body in a dynamic and well-co-ordinated movement. The simulation of animal movement is natural and builds energy. This is invigorating and at the same time boosts the movement strengthened by muscles and tendons. Partner exercises are very important for rhythm, balance and harmony in mutual reaction- as without an opposite it is more difficult to make progression. Pleasure in movement helps build and express one’s own strength and supports a healthy coexistence.
Through my 45+ years of practice and 35+ years of teaching, it has become clear to me that it not only matters to care for our ‘outer’ environment, but rather also that of our inner self. Inner demons such as inappropriate fear, pride, anger and greed have a powerfully isolating effect and will continue to affect us until we pay them enough attention to see through them. Kung Fu is intended to provide us with the will and the necessary energy to bring their causes to our awareness to thus actively and effectively tackle them.
